Bonne Mère Darboussier Rhum Hors d'Âges

Here's the twist: plenty of tasters assume this is an agricole, but it's actually molasses-based from Guadeloupe. It throws unusually floral, fruity notes — apricot, cherry, marzipan and cookies — where you'd expect grassy vegetal ones. Then it swings toward wood, smoke and coffee, almost bourbon-like. One reviewer called the taste "in the direction of bourbon." It shifts a lot in the glass, and a few find it too young.

The community says
  • Complex, evolving nose
  • Woody, bourbon-like
  • Keep in mind: Short finish

How does Bonne Mère Darboussier Rhum Hors d'Âges taste?

From community reviews · summarized with AI

Surprising floral-to-woody Guadeloupe sipper A surprising, whiskey-leaning molasses rum most find elegant and shifting in the glass. The catch: some think it's too young and wild, with a short, watery finish.

This Rhum Agricole is very special. A very complex nose. Also on the palate a very complex taste. A long finish. This Rhum Agricole is for connoisseurs and once again a good example of how different Rhum Agricole from Guadeloupe island can be compared to Martinique. I just had another flavor explosion in my mouth, mega intense... wow🥃

A typical Agricole. Here the distillate notes are absolutely predominant and the barrel storage tones go almost under. For my taste, this should still lie a few years

Overall an extremely elegant and smooth rum from Guadeloupe that I tasted at the Sweden Rumfest 2023. Many seems to believe it’s an Agricole, but it’s not it’s an molasses based rum. The Darboussier house started up in 1869 as a sugar factory and have taken its name from Jean Darboussier, a French trader and smuggler. This Hors s’Age is a blend of 6-8 years old molasses based column distilled rum that’s tropical aged in oak barrels, ex-cognac, ex-bourbon and ex-Armagnac.

Unusually fruity for an Agricole. Light and pleasing. But for me it is still a bit too young / wild.

First tasting of this bottle that was brought to me from Guadeloupe. Already, the rum evolves a lot in the glass over time. Surprising for such a young profile. Very floral and vanilla nose. Also some citrus. Nice. On the palate, the profile is soft with always this vegetal touch. Also some chili. Finish on wood and coffee. Nice.

An extremely fruity nose for an Agricole instead of the typical vegetal notes. I detect a lot of cherry, apricot, and some mango. On the palate then very diluted with mango, cinnamon, and cherry candy. Finish extremely short. A decent Agricole, but nothing more.

For Guadeloupe completely unusual first very floral then fruity notes, different from what is usually known from Agricole. Marzipan and cookies next to the fruity notes.

I got burnt caramel on the palette. It also had a light buttery taste, but not heavy buttery flavor like buttered popcorn. It was more that I could taste the butter IN the caramel than a stand-alone buttery taste. There was a touch of grassiness, but it wasn’t overpowering. This would be a good agricole for someone who is new to agricole rum and isn’t ready to get knocked out by grass and funk.

Olfactory extremely tense: hardly tangible and hardly assignable to a drawer. Taste also very exciting!

First nose very perfumed and pleasant, caramel scents. Second nose still very perfumed and very soft, maybe a slightly more alcoholic and fruity note. On the palate the alcohol is felt, but the rum is very soft, like a candy. Notes of nuts and ripe fruits. Very enjoyable finish leaving a taste of flambéed ripe banana in the mouth.

Round, less sweet, peaty rum. Spicy woody on the nose with notes of apricot and raisins. Slightly alcoholic like bourbon. Medium long finish. Oak smoky, reminiscent of whiskey. Not for lovers of sweet rums. Certainly an interesting rum for whiskey lovers.

Nice colour, interesting smell that change by time. At the beginning a bit too strong alcohol smell that change into wood, spices and smoke. Taste in the direction of bourbon, wood fine smoke. A good taste, nothing for beginners.
